The National Symphony Orchestra is a central art troupe that specializes in the creation and performance of symphonies and is situated in Kyongsang-dong, Central District, Pyongyang.

The National Symphony Orchestra was founded on August 8, Juche 35(1946) at the personal initiative and under the meticulous guidance of the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung.

The National Symphony Orchestra is a meaningful troupe, which is associated with the leadership exploits of the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung, the great leader Comrade Kim Jong Il, the respected Supreme Leader Comrade Kim Jong Un and the anti-Japanese war heroine Comrade Kim Jong Suk.

The National Symphony Orchestra, which heralded its birth with its first concert of Orchestra and Chorus “Song of General Kim Il Sung” on August 8, Juche 35(1946) in the presence of the great persons of Mt. Paektu, created numerous works in the periods of the new state building, the Fatherland Liberation War, the postwar rehabilitation and the socialist construction to give an impetus to the Korean people.

Under the meticulous guidance of the great General Kim Jong Il, the National Symphony Orchestra created and performed many masterpieces, including the orchestral pieces “A Bumper Harvest in the Chongsan Plain”, “Arirang”, “The Dear Home in My Native Village” based on the famous and folk songs, Symphony “The Sea of Blood” based on the immortal classical opera “The Sea of Blood”, Symphony Medley “Ode to the Party”, Piano Concerto “Ode to Comrade Kim Jong Il”, and Violin Concerto “Nostalgia”.

In addition, the National Symphony Orchestra created and performed the symphonies of world-famous composers such as Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Wagner and Shostakovich.

National Symphony Orchestra has staged over 20,000 concerts at home. It also made concert tours to many countries of the world, including Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Iraq, China and Japan.

The National Symphony Orchestra performed joint concerts with Maestro Lorin Maazel of New York Philharmonic, Alexander Petuhov of Russia, Charles Dutois of Switzerland, Inoue Mitsiyoshi of Japan.

The National Symphony Orchestra was awarded Kim Il Sung Order. It is an art troupe of high dignity which has the excellent artists, including Kim Il Sung Prize Winners, People’s Artists, Merited Artists, People’s Actors and Merited Actors.
