Future of Weather, Climate and Water

March 23 is World Meteorological Day.

At present, the iced areas in the polar regions are decreasing due to the temperature rise caused by global warming, which leads to a steady rise in sea level. And such extreme abnormal climatic phenomena as drought, downpour, high temperature and heavy rain hit every part of the world one after another.

Proceeding from the severe climate change and its importance, the World Meteorological Organization set this year’s theme as “The Future of Weather, Climate and Water across Generations” and calls on all meteorological organs of its member states to actively turn out in the worldwide meteorological undertakings for the safety and wellbeing of the community to cope with meteorological disasters.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is making efforts to ensure scientific accuracy and promptness of weather forecasts, alleviate the danger of calamities and minimize the damage therefrom.

Amid the modernization of meteorological observation, it has developed and introduced a homemade automatic meteorological observation device, mobile Doppler radar and other modern observation devices, thus ensuring real-time meteorological observation.

It also ensures the correctness of weather forecasts by thoroughly applying super-short-, short-, medium- and extended-range weather forecast methods and system in consideration of its physiographical conditions.

It has established a regular system of early warning disastrous meteorological phenomena and developed and introduced advanced methods of disastrous meteorological phenomena forecasts, including the forecasts of extreme downpour and heavy rain, size of hailstones, typhoon tracks and regional effects of typhoon, and a method of analysing the situation of typhoon.

Last year alone, it promptly forecast the agrometeorological situation according to farming processes such as spring drought, intense heat, start of rainy spell and typhoon forecast and their prospects by improving an extended-range agrometeorological forecast system. It also made a contribution to taking nationwide measures to cope with disastrous abnormal climate phenomena by developing and introducing a comprehensive high-precision agrometeorological service system for scientific and real-time analysis and forecast of climate changes and their effects.

Meanwhile, it set up a real-time flood forecast system on major rivers and reservoirs in the country, and minimizes flood and tidal wave damage by deciding the dangerous water level of tidal waves over breakwaters and embankments on the west coast and enhances the accuracy of sea, marine and tsunami prediction by updating marine observation.

It organizes various information activities through the mass media and networks to raise the public awareness of calamities and crisis such as the issue of warnings and the methods of dealing with the crisis.

The DPRK makes efforts to put meteorology on a modern and information basis so as to guarantee the future of weather, climate and water scientifically and technologically, and further promote cooperation and coordination with the World Meteorological Organization.
