Typical Folds in DPRK
Typical folds in the DPRK involve Jangsusan, Songchon, Komdok and West Pyongyang folds.
Jangsusan Fold, about 25 kilometres southwest of the township of Jaeryong County in South Hwanghae Province, is a large fan-shaped fold rare to be found in the world.
Covering an area between 150 metres and 350 metres above sea level, its bottom is about 250 metres wide.
The fold visually shows the peculiar features and shape of Mesozoic tectonic motion in Korea.
Songchon Fold is about 16 kilometres east of the township of Songchon County in South Phyongan Province. It is of significance in studying the shape and features of fold structures.
Komdok Fold in Tanchon City of South Hamgyong Province in an ore-contain structure has a complicated superimposed fold structure.
West Pyongyang Fold is in the cliff about 500 metres north of West Pyongyang Railway Station in Pyongyang. It is 120 metres long and 20 metres high.
It shows the Taebo tectonic movement in the Mesozoic era and the change of strata by tectogenesis.
The folds have been inscribed on the list of natural monuments of the country for their economic and academic significance.
