Wetlands for Protecting Water Birds of Endangered Species Confirmed in DPRK
Of late, priority wetlands for protecting the water birds of major endangered species have been newly confirmed in the DPRK.
Scientists of the Biodiversity Institute under the State Academy of Sciences have conducted the survey and study of over 50 wetlands in the country for the last ten years. In the course of this, they verified the distribution areas of nearly 20 globally-endangered species of water birds such as black-faced spoonbill, red-crowned crane, stork and far-eastern curlew, types of habitats, details of resource quantities and seasonal distribution features.
The newly-confirmed priority wetlands for protection are the coastal areas between Sindo County of North Phyongan Province and Mundok County of South Phyongan Province, between Jungsan County of South Phyongan Province and Nampho City and Unryul County of South Hwanghae Province, between Ryongyon and Paechon counties in South Hwanghae Province and between Thongchon County of Kangwon Province and Hamhung in South Hamgyong Province, and the area in the mouth of the Tuman River in Rason City.
