“I was gripped by despair when I was diagnosed as having a breast cancer. But I recovered my health and started a new life thanks to the benefits of the socialist healthcare system”, said Ryu Kwang Ok, a military officer’s wife resident in Thaechon County, North Phyongan Province, who had been admitted to the Breast Tumour Institute of the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital.

The Breast Tumour Institute was established in November 2012 in order to provide preventive and clinical treatment of breast diseases and make scientific research into them.

It organizes check-ups and preventive and curative service in March and September every year according to the breast check-up system of the state. It conducts the work to detect and prevent mammary diseases in the early stages at factories with many women employees. It brings home to women the common knowledge of mastopathy and breast cancer so as to take preventive measures. It applies surgical operations, anticancer pharmacotherapy and radiotherapy and hormone inhibiting treatment to patients.

It also proactively offers medical services through the telemedicine system.

It sponsors the national medical science symposium on breast cancer every year. It is introducing into clinical practice tens of papers, including “Clinical study for increasing cosmetic results in BCS by using LD flaps”.

At present, it is carrying on twenty research projects, including “A study on the clinical application of biochip for predicting the response of chemotherapy in breast cancer”.
