Pyongyang Grand Theatre

Among the monumental edifices in Pyongyang, the capital city of the DPRK, is the Pyongyang Grand Theatre with Korean-style roofs.

This edifice with advantageous architectural style of the nation was opened to the public in August Juche 49 (1960).

President Kim Il Sung personally chose the site for the theatre, one of architectures representing the 1960s in the country.

The theatre has all conditions for art creation, performance and appreciating.

The 4th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea and many other important political functions and cultural art festivals took place at the theatre.

The theatre is the cradle of the opera revolution where Sea of Blood-type revolutionary operas were produced under the leadership of Chairman Kim Jong Il.

At this theater, creators and artistes of the Phibada Opera Troupe produced operas of various themes reflecting the Korean people's ideological sentiment and features of the age and colorful art pieces and put them on the stage. They also created famous operas of world in a fresh way.

Viewing performances at the Pyongyang Grand Theater, many political figures and members of delegations from different countries admired the developing Juche-oriented culture and art.
