For Conservation and Sustained Use
of Biodiversity

Biodiversity is of great significance in sustained economic development and environmental protection in each country. It also plays an important role in preserving ecological environment around the world.

Staff reporter Ko Chol Hwa had an interview with Ri Chung Song, section chief of the nature reserve research laboratory, and Ryu Kum Hyok, section chief of the preservation biology research laboratory, at the biodiversity institute under the State Academy of Sciences.

Ko: Today, conservation and sustained use of biodiversity pose themselves as an important undertaking vital to the existence of humankind, I think.

Ri: You’re right. The loss of biodiversity being witnessed throughout the world gives rise to the destruction of foundations for natural ecosystem and economic development and thus poses a serious threat to the existence of human beings. The UN has recently released a report that more than one million species of animals and plants are endangered with extinction and most of them would perish in a few decades. The World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) has already said that half of the species of fauna and flora in 35 regions with rich biodiversity around the world would go out of existence due to the ongoing global warming.

Ryu: This being the situation, many countries around the world are taking proactive steps to preserve biodiversity and make use of it in a sustained way. The Convention on Biological Diversity has been adopted, and May 22 is designated as the World Day of Bio-diversity. “Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health” is the theme of the World Day of Bio-diversity for this year.

Ko: I was told that the issue of designating biosphere reserves in a scientific way and making sustained use of them has become a global trend for conserving biodiversity.

Ri: You are right. At present, many worldwide biosphere reserves comprise national and natural parks, natural monuments reserves, wildlife sanctuaries and habitats, landscape and seascape reserves, resource management reserves, and other regions under protection by other systems and such internationally recognized regions as the world heritage and Ramsar Wetlands. As of July 2018, over 680 biosphere reserves in some 120 countries have been inscribed on the list of the UNESCO and are under conservation and management. The areas of Mts Paektu, Kuwol, Myohyang and Chilbo in our country have already been inscribed as the world biosphere reserves.

The 30th meeting of the UNESCO International Coordinating Council of the Man and Biosphere Programme held in July 2018 decided to register the Mt Kumgang area in our country as a world biosphere reserve.

Ko: Please tell me about conservation and sustained development of biodiversity in our country.

Ryu: The work of conserving and promoting biodiversity has been conducted since long on a nationwide scale. Our country set the period from March to July as the period for protecting useful animals.

In accordance with it, protection of fauna and flora resources is in full swing in all the reserves across the country. The effort to conserve aquatic resources also proves successful. This year the North Hamgyong provincial fishery management bureau stocked the sea with more than a million pollack fries.

Provinces, cities and counties are waging vigorous campaigns to win the title of model county in land and environmental conservation and to plant trees and prevent environmental pollution during the general mobilization period for land administration in spring and autumn. Mass media are giving wide publicity to heightening social interest in biodiversity.

Based on the survey of biodiversity in various wetlands of over 50 inland regions in the east and west coasts, our institute has recently made a list of national wetlands and published it in Korean and English versions. We will, in the future, too, push ahead with our research into conservation and sustained use of biological resources in our country, thereby rendering active services to the existence of humankind and nature conservation.
